Cal Poly SWE visited Ms. DiSanti’s virtual classrooms for Atascadero Middle School on October 19th, 2020 to teach students about mechanical engineering. Before beginning, we took a short mechanical engineering quiz with the students so we could assess our knowledge. It was also a great time to get to know the students and have some playful competitiveness. We learned about the definition of engineering and the importance of the engineering design process. We then jumped right into learning about mechanical engineering and its main principles. Because we couldn’t do a physical experiment, we focused on software that would pertain to mechanical engineering. The students learned about different AutoCAD softwares that mechanical engineers currently use in industry. They were also able to view projects from Cal Poly students in different clubs, such as Cal Poly Racing. With a new approach to online teaching, a lot of problem solving skills were gained not just by the students, but by everyone involved in the event.
