On Friday, October 18th, Cal Poly SWE hosted over 30 high school students to visit Cal Poly and shadow female engineering students. Each participant was paired with a host in a major they were interested in and spent most of Friday attending their host’s classes and exploring Cal Poly SLO’s campus. In the evening, they participated in a scavenger hunt, an engineering presentation, and some fun icebreaker games to get to know each other. They spent that night in their host’s dorm or on-campus apartment and came back the next morning on the 19th to enjoy an exciting zumba class and then work together to complete an engineering design challenge of building a catapult.
Through their engineering challenge, students were responsible for building a catapult that could send a ping-pong ball the furthest. Their materials included a plastic spoon, popsicle sticks, masking tape, rubber bands, and they were also required to use two recycled materials including cardboard boxes, egg cartons, and more. They had one hour to design and build the catapult in groups of 4-5 students. The catapults were then presented and tested for whose could launch the ball the furthest.
