Monthly Mentors was able to continue its third year, this time with a fully online approach! Our partnership with the 6th and 8th grade classes at Santa Lucia Middle School in Cambria, California, has grown and blossomed. The main focus of the quarter was to continue outreach to the students despite physical distancing, the new online learning environment, and a possible lack of communication.
Throughout the fall, volunteers would visit Santa Lucia Middle School in their Google Meet classrooms. A presentation on an engineering discipline was given and then the volunteers would go through a hands-on activity that only required common household items, in order to accommodate students who may not have the same resources that a school environment would provide. The students have learned about environmental and bioresource and agricultural engineering! They surprised us with fun and laugh-filled conversations and we cannot wait to visit them again very soon.
