4-H Elementary Outreach

April 27, 2019

Cal Poly Society of Women Engineers sent three volunteers to the 4-H Foods and Arts Celebration on Saturday April 27th, 2019 to give a series of breakout sessions on STEM and engineering careers. About 90 students participated in the event and were able to connect with the volunteers about why they chose engineering in college while expanding their understanding of STEM. Students were able to practice their engineering skills by coding Scribbler Robots to draw out various shapes and designs. They practiced “talking” to the computers by instructing their robots to move using very precise commands. This required the students to revise their codes until they were very specific and clear enough for the robot to correctly draw their design without any errors. Students became invested in coding their robots to draw their favorite shape and the most intricate design they could imagine.
